Choosing a DLP approach: four questions to answer first

Data loss prevention projects fail when the tool is chosen before the problem is understood. Four questions that point to the right approach.

Data loss prevention (DLP) is one of the most valuable controls an organization can run, and one of the easiest to get wrong. A tool that floods the team with false alerts, or blocks legitimate work, is quickly switched to “monitor only” and forgotten. Answering four questions first avoids that.

1. What data matters most?

Customer records, card data, financial statements, source code and board papers each look different and need different detection techniques. Start with a short list of the data types that would hurt most if they leaked.

2. Where does it leave?

Email, web uploads, USB drives, printing, cloud apps and messaging all need different controls. Some approaches focus on endpoints and email, others on cloud and web traffic. Knowing your top channels narrows the field quickly.

3. Do you classify data already?

If documents are already labelled, DLP can enforce policy against those labels, as one of our insurance clients did. If not, classification should be part of the project, as it was for one of our banking clients, because it gives the DLP policies a clear foundation.

4. What happens after data leaves?

Sometimes sensitive files must be shared with partners, regulators or auditors. Persistent file protection keeps control over a file wherever it goes, including the ability to revoke access later. That is a different need from stopping data at the perimeter.

Our DLP assistant asks exactly these questions and shows which of our four DLP approaches fits best, as a percentage match.
