Five things to do right now

01

Isolate, don't wipe

Disconnect affected machines from the network, but leave them powered on. Shutting down or reinstalling destroys the evidence an investigation needs.

02

Preserve logs

Keep firewall, server, email and security tool logs. Pause any automatic log deletion or rotation.

03

Reset from a clean device

Change administrator and affected account passwords, and revoke sessions, using a device you trust is not compromised.

04

Don't engage the attacker

Do not reply to ransom notes or pay anything before taking advice. Keep the incident on a need-to-know basis.

05

Start a timeline

Write down what was noticed, when, by whom and what has been done since. It speeds up the investigation.

Check your reporting duties. If personal data may have been exposed and there is a real risk of harm to the people concerned, Kenya's Data Protection Act requires the data controller to notify the Data Protection Commissioner within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach, and sector regulators may have their own reporting rules. We can help you work through them. Read our guide
